Inaugural Scientific Session

New International Heart Valve Society

Dear HVSA Members:

In 2001, the Heart Valve Society of America was created by a group of nationally and internationally recognized American experts.  Their purpose was to advance the knowledge of heart valve disease -- a growing public health problem -- through education, information and research.

In 2004, HVSA was incorporated and received nonprofit status.

Over the past 14 years, the Society presented seven Valves in the Heart of the Big Apple conferences in New York City and two similar conferences in Las Vegas before we joined in 2009 to coordinate and co-sponsor conferences with our European counterpart -- the Society for Heart Valve Disease (SHVD).  These efforts grew into major international conferences, indeed, we believe them to have been THE major international conferences focused solely on valve diseases in all their aspects.

At the end of December, HVSA will be succeeded by the new international Heart Valve Society (HVS) -- which was created in collaboration with non-HVSA valve experts from Europe and elsewhere.

The new Society will be the next step in promoting prevention, treatment and management of heart valve diseases in the US and throughout the world.  All HVSA members in good standing will automatically become members of HVS.

It has been a pleasure working with you over these 13 years.  I do hope that our membership will support the efforts of Michael Borger, who will be the first HVS President, and the rest of the leadership team and Board -- in advancing current knowledge of recognition and management of valve diseases and spearheading efforts to create new knowledge in our field.

Best wishes for the holiday season,

Jeffrey S. Borer, MD
